Swirl Marks Explained: Where They Come From and How Correction Fixes Them

Step outside on a sunny day and look at almost any car that's been through a few years of automatic car washes, and you'll see them — fine, circular scratches that only really show up under direct light. Those are swirl marks, and they're one of the most common paint concerns we see.

Where they actually come from

Swirl marks are caused by abrasive contact moving across the paint in circular motions — automatic car wash brushes, dirty wash mitts, or drying with a rough towel are the most common causes. Each pass drags fine grit across the clear coat, and over time those micro-scratches build up into the hazy, spider-webbed look you see in bright light.

Why washing alone won't fix them

Swirl marks live in the clear coat itself, not on top of it — no amount of washing or waxing removes damage that's already been cut into the surface. Fixing them means leveling the surrounding clear coat down to the depth of the marks, which is exactly what machine polishing does.

How correction addresses it

A single-stage polish handles lighter swirling and restores gloss quickly. Heavier or long-neglected swirling usually needs multi-stage correction — a cutting compound stage followed by a finishing polish — to fully level the clear coat without removing more material than necessary.
