Gravel, Grit and Your Windshield: Rock Chip Basics

If you commute on Deerfoot Trail, Stoney Trail or Highway 1 regularly, you already know the sound of gravel hitting your front bumper. Calgary's highway network and gravel-heavy shoulder maintenance mean rock chip exposure is a normal part of daily driving here — not a rare bad-luck event.

Where the damage actually lands

The hood, front bumper, fenders, mirrors and windshield take the overwhelming majority of highway-speed impacts. That's exactly why PPF packages are structured around those panels first — the areas that see the most contact get the most coverage before extending further back on the vehicle.

Ceramic coating isn't the fix for this

It's a common mix-up: ceramic coating is a hard, glossy, chemical-resistant layer, but it doesn't meaningfully change how a panel responds to a physical impact. PPF is a urethane film with real thickness, built specifically to absorb that impact instead of the clear coat underneath it.

A practical starting point

For most daily drivers, protecting the hood, front bumper and mirrors covers the highest-risk zones without the cost of a full-vehicle wrap. If you do a lot of highway driving or commute behind gravel trucks regularly, extending coverage further back is worth the conversation.
