Can car detailing get rid of scratches?
Sometimes — and it depends entirely on how deep the scratch actually goes. Understanding your vehicle's paint structure is the key to knowing what's realistic before you book.
How automotive paint is layered
Modern paint is made up of a base coat (the colour) and a clear coat on top, which is what gives paint its gloss and protects the colour underneath. Below both of those is the primer and bare metal or plastic panel.
Scratches polishing can fix
Swirl marks, light scuffs and scratches that only affect the clear coat can typically be polished out. Correction works by leveling the surrounding clear coat down to the depth of the mark — since the clear coat has some thickness to work with, this can fully remove shallow damage without harming the paint.
Scratches polishing can't fix
If a scratch is deep enough to reach the base coat (you'll often see the colour change or a hint of grey/white at the bottom of the scratch) or the metal underneath, polishing can't safely remove it — there isn't enough clear coat left to level without cutting through it entirely. Those situations need touch-up paint or body shop repair, not detailing.
A simple way to check
Run a fingernail lightly across the scratch. If your nail catches or snags, it's likely deep enough to be through the clear coat. If it glides over smoothly, it's more likely a surface-level mark that correction can meaningfully improve or remove.

Ceramic coating protects gloss, UV resistance and ease of cleaning. PPF (paint protection film) is a physical layer that absorbs rock chips and road debris impact. They solve different problems and are often used together.
