Paint protection film, often referred to as PPF or 3M in Calgary, is a physical thermoplastic polyurethane film that’s put on top of your car’s paint to protect it from stone chips/ rock chips, scratches, scuffs, swirls, bug splatters, and minor damage. This film is self healing, which means you can remove most scratches by just parking it outside in the sun or heating the film up with a heat gun.
The best way possible to prevent your car from stone chips and scratches is having paint protection film (PPF) installed on your vehicle. You have to stop rust before it starts and that’s exactly what PPF does. All the rail dust particles which cause rust won’t stick to your paint.
These are two very different kinds of protections. Ceramic coating is a longer lasting and more durable type of wax and it helps keep your car cleaner for longer and makes washing super easy. PPF, on the other hand, is made to protect rocks chips and scratches which ceramic coating can’t do. PPF can protect your paint from small damages and minor scuffs and swirls, which ceramic coating is unable to do. The best way to protect your car is by installing PPF on most of the car panels, and applying ceramic coating on the rest, to always keep the car glossy and make cleaning easier.
It’s always recommended to get PPF the same day or week you pick up your new car so that you don’t get rock chips on your new paint. Try to avoid highway driving until you get PPF, so that you don’t get rock chips. In Calgary, PPF is almost a must have for new vehicles, as there is so much sand and small rocks on the roads.
These two are very comparable PPF’s. They are both self healing and both offer a 10 year warranty. It’s very hard to tell if there is actually a difference between them.
A lot of dealerships try to outsource paint protection film to local Calgary PPF install shops ‘for a cheaper price’, which may result in poor installation of the film. In addition, the film used might not be the best quality. So, we recommend taking it to a professional Calgary PPF install shop, preferably a 3M certified shop like The Local Detailers, to get the best protection possible.
There are two ways to apply paint protection film to your paint. One is a pre-cut kit, made by a plotter, and the second option is a bulk installation, where you trim off all the excess film with a blade. We don’t recommend the second method for beginners, as you might scratch your paint. We use our plotter to custom cut the film so that the blade will never touch your paint. We also tuck in the edges where possible, so that the install will be invisible.
Yes, you can apply PPF over rock chips, however you’re still going to be able to see the rock chips because the film is transparent. We also offer paint chip repair and paint correction before installing PPF, so that the install looks much better.
Yes! We offer free pick up and drop off in Calgary, with every car that is receiving a PPF-related package.
We have one of the best warranties in Calgary on pain protection film. We offer a 10 years warranty on our PPF installations.
No, 3M ppf doesn’t become yellow, and we offer a 10 years warranty in case of yellowing.
We are certified 3M installers, as well as other PPF brands, for which we are also authorized installers.
Needless to say, a car without paint protection film in Calgary will be full of rock chips, which will result in a vehicle with an unsightly appearance and will lower the resale value.
We use 3M’s Scotchgard, Xpel, and Suntek because they a very thick and last longer thank most other brands of PPF in Calgary.
Yes, PPF can be waxed, but try not to leave the wax on the PPF for long because it would be hard to wipe off. Try to use spray waxes and ceramic coatings so that the application process will be easier.
We recommend not washing your car for at least a week after ppf installation to let the film cure and also do not get close to the edges with the pressure washer to prevent peeling. The proper way to wash your car at a car wash is to use pre-soak first and let it sit for a minute and then rinse without getting too close to the paint. You can then go ahead and pre-soak it again if you want to do a proper hand wash.
PPF can be removed but we recommend taking it to a professional Calgary PPF shop so that you don’t peel off the paint while trying to remove it. This process can take anywhere from two to five hours depending on how old the film is. We use steamers so that we don’t damage the paint underneath the film.
That depends on the quality of the film that you use . We use quality paint protection film that lasts at least 10 years. For a well taken care car, 15+ years is not uncommon.
The best way to keep your paint protection film shiny is by not taking it to a brush car wash. Brush car washes will scratch your ppf and paint, so it’s always a better idea to take it to a touch-less car wash or a self-serve car wash.
A pre-cut paint protection film can be applied successfully if you are skilled at installation, but it’s always better to take it to a professional and certified Calgary PPF shop because it requires a very clean place that is free of any debris and also a proper prep of the car, which might include rock chip repair and paint correction.
